I thought I'd post one more book cover as I enjoy them so much. This is from Sara Donati's upcoming release in 2010. She writes for the secular market and her 18th-century novels are very long and multi-faceted. 300,000 words for this one! I've only read one and really enjoyed her descriptions of the natural world though I can't sanction some of the content. This cover is like I imagined Lael's would be prior to publication. The colors are so rich and there is a wildness about it as well as an air of unreality. Per this reviewer, anyway:) I'm sure each one of us has very different reactions which just makes it all the more interesting. Sometimes the publishing sales team has the final say on a cover and it gets tweaked or redone altogether. I'm blessed to have a publisher that asks for my input regarding my protagonist, her dress, and the background. Wonderful stuff! I just had to wait a long time before it finally happened:)
Do you have any best loved ideas for your own book cover? Or, if you aren't a writer, are there any book covers that really "pop" for you?
The covers of this book are too far apart. -Ambrose Bierce
Laura, I have a fuzzy picture of a cover for the story I've just finished rewriting, Violets & Violins. My hero and heroine play a violin duet at the end of the story. I can see them facing one another, instruments in hand. I'd have her in the lavender dress that's his favorite with her oft-worn spray of silk violets at her throat. There would be a purple cast to the cover with some violets nestled in a corner. Oh, and the ampersand in the title would resemble a treble clef.
ReplyDeleteHmm. Guess my vision isn't as fuzzy as I thought, is it? :D
That's a beautiful cover, Laura! I'm a big book cover "junkie" and I love perusing the fiction shelves to see new designs and trends.
ReplyDeleteHere we are again, thinking alike. I just posted this morning about my cover art daydreaming. I found a photo on Flickr that captures the essence of my WIP better than I ever thought possible. Of course, I'm ages from ever needing to be thinking about such things, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. :)
ReplyDeleteI hadn't seen this cover for Sara's book yet. Very nice! I read the first two in that series. 300K! Oh, how I wish I could let my novels sprawl so. Mine started out around 300K. I have it pared down to 161K at present, and still chipping away.
Keli,
ReplyDeleteI love your description here. I can just see the pair facing each other as you said - and the lavender throughout - and then the very clever treble clef:) Being a violin lover myself and having read so few books with this involved, it's top of my list already! Hold onto that wonderful vision - and that title. Just a matter of time for you as it was for me. Thank you for sharing this. I read it over several times as I liked it so much!
Ruth, I bet you see more titles than anybody I know due to your line of work! I never thought of the aspect of designs and trends (can you tell I'm not an artist?) but they are really a factor. Even the Christian book covers of 10 years ago are kind of shocking as they are so poorly done when compared to today (in my humble opinion):) I'm with you on loving perusing new titles! If you see any that jump out please let me know!
ReplyDeleteYes, Lori, 161,000 words seems almost dietary! I bet she doesn't have to hit the delete button a whole lot:) Sigh. And you just might be a lot closer to that contract than you think! You're certainly doing all the right things.
ReplyDeleteDid you really post on book covers today!? Fun! Off to see Willa now...
that cover would definitely make me pick it up and take a look. It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIt's really our kind of fiction, Lisa! 18th-century all the way! Her books are always bestsellers and the cover art may help get her there:)
