beautiful books 2011

This post will be short and sweet as I'm working toward that deadline for The Colonel's Lady, even as the titling committee is meeting to see if they're keeping this title or will change to a better one. I'll post about that as soon as I hear. This is such a busy month for me with lots of online interviews and giveaways and book business. I'd so appreciate your prayers on my behalf. I pray for my readers daily so that way we're both blessed!

I couldn't wait to post these new historical covers for you from my publisher. See any that just "pop" for you? I'll share my insights if you'll share yours:) Bless you today in whatever it is you're doing!

Nothing new here, except my marrying, which to me is a matter of profound wonder. ~Abraham Lincoln on his marriage to Mary Todd, 1842

  2. It will be my pleasure to pray for you, Laura.

I like the cover for Lady in the Mist. I thought it sounded good when I read the synopsis on Rel's blog. I think it's one I'll be looking forward to next year.

The Lincoln quote makes me smile! I love it.

  3. Hi Laura! Prayers are heading your way my friend :) "The Colonel's Lady" is such a LOVELY and PERFECT title- prayerfully they'll keep it because I've grown so fond of it :) And thank you for keeping us in your prayers, too, that means so much!

These covers are just great! I've heard of Amanda Cabot and Ann Shorey, but confess I haven't read any of their stuff, yet. Haven't read any of Laurie Alice Eakes, either, but out of the three covers hers jumps out at me the most- from the colors to the title.

Praying you have a beautiful rest of the day! And thanks for the quote, BTW- gotta love that Abe ;)

    Blessings,
    Amanda Stanley

  4. I just about swoon every time I'm introduced to a new author. These three are new to me. I'll have to check and see if they are new authors or I'm woefully out of date in my bid to keep current in all things in inspirational fiction. Sigh. I need to sleep less and read more.

But if I'm to judge a book by it's cover I'd have to say I want to read them all. I find it interesting that the ladies are all posed in nearly the same manner and all facing the same way. I wonder why that is?

'The Dawn of a Dream' strikes my fancy, I think, because of the movement in the background. Trains always get me excited, anticipating a trip or a visit from family or friends so that kind of tugs at me a bit more than the other two.

Okay just checked out Amanda Cabot and I see she has written a number of books. I like the 'sound' of her from a visit to her website so she's on my 'must buy' list when I go to the bookstore later this week.

Just placed a couple of holds on Ann Shorey's books at my public library. :-)

Alas, I can't find any of Laurie Alice Eakes' work available so I will have to wait until 2011.

Laura, I will pray that you are buoyed up in the Spirit and able to meet all your obligations both personal and professional and that you'll enjoy the journey!

  5. Thinking of you at this busy crazy time! I am so excited for you with the debut of Morrow and the finish of TCL. Amazing!~
I LOVE all these covers. I really love these old time-realistic covers that are coming to the fore-front these days. They are so eye catching and also realistic. They really draw you in.
While all of the covers are gorgeous, the third (far right) cover is my favorite just from a composition standpoint. The dark edges and the lighted center really make the character stand out. The stone cottage and dark rich cloak also make me want to snatch this one off a shelf! I fact, I'm gonna look it up now and see what its about!
    I'm hopelessly visual ;)

  6. Julia, Thanks so much. It really is a comfort to see your words. I had a good working day today despite Randy being home from work and the boys very busy. Your prayers are powerful and effective:) Praying for you, too, and your family. You are a dear friend!

  7. Hi Michelle,
I had a feeling you'd been over to Australia/Rel's and peeked like I did:) I, too, am so drawn to Lady in the Mist. In fact, when I first saw it I nearly sighed as it is one of those covers you wish was yours. So I did something I've never done before and emailed the author and told her how beautiful I think it is. Of course, she agrees! Can't wait to read it, too. I've always liked the midwife theme.

Glad you like the Lincoln quote. Proud he was a Kentuckian like us:) Thanks so much for your prayers! Praying for you, too.

  8. Oh Amanda, I hope so, too! The working title is just right and the essence of the story:) I really can't imagine they'd come up with anything better?! Though they often surprise me. I'm just so, so curious to see the cover for this one, but that is a few months away yet. October, usually. Can't wait to share that with you here!

I'm with you about LITM! Something about it just grabs me and wants me to read RIGHT NOW:) Am sad it will be months yet. I've not read any of Ann's or Amanda's either though they write for my publisher. Too many research books and not enough fiction for me!

I sure am blessed to have praying friends like you. It makes such a huge difference in our lives! Prayerlessness is such a handicap. Bless you, dear Amanda!

  9. Kav,
Oh, you've used one of my favorite archaic words - swoon! We really are kindred spirits when it comes ot authors and covers. I'm thrilled you were able to locate some of these at your library. GREAT:) That makes me feel useful and happy. I know I take book tips from you readers all the time! Always a joyous pursuit!

That is very interesting that the women on the covers are all posed the same way. Hmmm. The first 2 are lovely and remind me of my Little House on the Prairie days which I never have grown out of. I'm also a huge Dr. Quinn fan. The 3rd book just melts my heart for some reason, maybe because of the sweet expression on her face. But also the bit of mystery surrounding her. Being a Victoria Holt devotee, the cover and title remind me of her books.

Hope it is sunny where you are and you are having a good start of the week. Your prayers and friendship bless me!

  12. Heather,
I posted for you as blogger is still uncooperative and I couldn't let your great comment slip by:) It's always so interesting to me to hear your insights as an artist. Looks like we're all very drawn to The Lady in the Mist. I'm so very visual too and raced to Amazon to read the blurb when I first saw it. It really sings - the facial expression, clothing, lighting, background, everything. Can't wait to read:) I think it comes out in January.

Thanks for cheering me on this crazy month! That means more than I can say! I'm almost finished with your wonderful questions and should get those back to you this week. Then on with the giveaway!

  13. Loved all the covers but the Lady In The Mist jumped out and grabbed me! Paying you back today for all the prayers you've prayed on my behalf...bless you dear friend!

  14. Laura, all three of those are truly beautiful covers. I love how the clothes reflect the time periods of each. I don't even have to open them to guess the dates in the books.

Praying for you, your deadline, and your title. :)

  15. I was just reading your response to Kav, and you read Victoria Holt also??!!

I loved her books when I was in high school. My mom introduced me to her. I have almost all of them either in paperback or in hardback. Did you read any of the books she wrote under the Phillipa Carr or Jean Plaidy pseudonyms?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Diana,
Oh I love when you stop by! Sweet words, dear friend. Isn't it amazing that we can stay connected when we're on different coasts through our mutual love of good books and prayer:) And gardening and cooking and all the rest...

I'm smiling that you like The Lady in the Mist so much. It really is a wonderful cover ~ one I'd be pleased to have my name on!

Praying today is full of blessings for you, large and small!

  17. Lorna,
You are so right ~ the time periods are so evident from the clothing, etc. Wouldn't it be fun to spend a day with Revell's art team and see just what they do to create such grabbable books?!

Since you've just navigated your own deadline, you have extra insight into mine. I'm afraid I'm entering the bleary-eyed stage of reading it too many times. But I still love the story and characters so that is good! I'm always a bit sad at this stage ~ but oh so releived to get it off my desk:) Prayers back atcha!

  18. Hi Michelle,
Guess who introduced me to Victoria Holt? Mothers are great, aren't they?! I was sad to hear that she'd passed away a few years ago as she was so prolific. I still have one of her last books ~ Snare of Serpents. I think she was almost 100 when she died. I never saw a picture of her though I always wondered what she looked like. She seemed to do well at being an elusive author. And yes, I've read all her books under her pen names. I really liked the ones about the British royals like Ann Boleyn and rascally old Henry, etc. Am wondering if you had a favorite?

  19. Lady in the Mist sounds wonderful and I'm excited for the conclusion of the Texas Dreams series! These are all on my wishlist! Looks like 2011 is going to be another great year for books!

I hope everything goes well for you today! :-)

    XOXO~ Renee

  20. Very neat that your mother also introduced you to Victoria Holt. Some of the hardback books do have her photo. Do a google image search, and the first photo you'll see is the one that's on the back inside of the book. My favorite one of the Victoria Holt novels is The Devil on Horseback, the one set in France during the Revolution. Of the Phillipa Carr books I've read, I'm partial to The Lion Triumphant (Elizabeth Era) and Lament for a Lost Lover (Restoration Era). I have not read most of the 18th Century books in that series though, because Pikeville Public Library did not have them. I shall have to see if Lexington does. As for the Jean Plaidy books, I really liked the ones about the Stuarts. Especially the first one about Charles II. It's called The Wandering Prince. She also wrote one about his mother, Henrietta Maria which I really enjoyed. It was originally titled Myself, My Enemy, but I believe I saw on amazon that it's been republished with a different title.

  21. Nice covers! I'm drawn to Ladies in the Mist.

I'll be so happy to keep you in my prayers, as I know you pray for me often. I hope you'll be able to get lots done, stay focused, have little interference, and take a little time to sip some refreshing lemonade on your porch!

I hope the titling committee's choice please you.

  22. LOL- I posted a comment yesterday and it did go through because I saw it here but it had since disappeared :( I'm getting the follow-up comments on my email, too. What on earth is going on with blogger? I'm sorry you keep running into problems since it's your blog and all :(

Anyway, praying you have a beautiful day Laura! Hope you get this :)

    Blessings,
    Amanda Stanley

  23. Amanda, How strange! Your post of the 5th/yesterday just came through right this minute with your current one, only blogger will only let me post this follow-up one! I am truly sorry to you and others who have tried to leave comments only to have them disappear or refuse to post. Grrr again. I noticed over at Seekerville they were having the same problem this morning and everyone's comments were coming in as "anonymous." Not sure what is going on. Maybe blogger has a virus?! I tried to report it and find help but that is another can of worms...

It IS a beautiful day, Amanda, as the sun is shining and you showed up:) I will keep trying to post your earlier comment. Bless you for coming back!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hmmmm, losing comments all over the place! Well...

Thanks so much, Carla. I am keeping you close in prayer especially about this book project. I'm nearly as excited as you are!! You inspired me yesterday when you took a break and went for a swim per facebook. I then took a break and went for a walk. Can't wait to hear more from your end!

  25. Thanks, Renee! I know you are on top of the new books coming out but hope I surprised you with Lady in the Mist:) Rel is so very good at keeping us posted on what's coming up, huh? She is privy to things way before the rest of us. Nothing like a new cover or two to anticipate.

Hope you are doing well there. I read that PA is having some intense heat! My editor is is NYC and it was 99 degrees there yesterday:) Sounds like heaven to me...

  27. Laura, I think your right and blogger does have a virus! I posted a comment on the Writes of Passage blog this morning and it has appeared and disappeared about 4 times- its like a surprise every time you log on, LOL! And I think it even says 0 comments over there but there is at least 2- when they want to show up, that is ;)

Thanks for trying again my friend!

    Blessings,

  28. Amanda, Thanks for letting me know it's not just here! I was beginning to think it was me:) Only heaven can figure this out! What a silly thing this is. But it is fun to touch base more than usual, huh?! You are a dear:)

  29. Michelle,
You are my go-to gal for book stuff! Okay, I just found a pic of Victoria Holt per open library site. She kind of has an Elizabeth Taylor-type look. And the bio said she had 8 pen names!! Over 14 million of her books in print. Amazing:) Now, we'll stand by and see if this comment disappears - lol!

  30. I love them, however I particularly like the cover on "Tomorrow's Garden"..love that title as well :)

It will be an honor to pray for you and thank you so very much for your prayers.

Just love the Lincoln quote :)his are always so great.

    Wishing you a lovely day,

  31. Hi Laura, hope you had a good holiday weekend!

those books look interesting. I am especially interested in the one with the train in the background. For some reason it makes me think of the show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Which is one of my favorites!

And Lady in the Mist sounds intriguing.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Doreen,
So happy to see you here:) I'm not surprised you like the cover with the garden. Her last one had flowers all over the front and it was lovely, too. And thanks so much for the prayers. It's so good to support each other that way. Bless you right back!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lisa,
I bet you had a very fun 4th! I think the cover with the train is wonderful, too, as I love that sort of thing. And I am a Dr. Quinn fan myself. It really does remind me of that ~ both Ann's and Amanda's. Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope you are having some sun down there today. Finally beautiful here!

  34. Laura,

I've missed reading your blog posts while I've been gone! But I'm back now! :D

These covers are all very lovely--I love trains, so the second cover is great in that way, but I like the color scheme and soft loveliness of the first cover, too! Thanks for sharing!

Praying that God will give you strength throughout this book promoting time!

    ~Amber

P.S. I, too, love the quote you shared! Too sweet! :)

  35. Amber,
So very happy to see you! Hope your vacation was relaxing, fun, and inspiring:) You were missed!

Glad you like the covers here. There are so many I wish I could post them all but thought I'd start with 3. More coming! It's fun to anticipate all these good books together. Love hearing what draws you to the covers. They really are each unique and beautiful in their own way.

Will have to mosey over to your blog later today! Welcome back!!

  36. There are so many good covers out there! I really like Lady in the Mist. May have to read that one. :)

Laura, I finished Courting Morrow Little over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Didn't want it to end! Thanks for the fun ride.

  37. Sally,
You always turn up at the most delightful times:) Thanks so much for reading, not wanting it to end, and taking time to tell me! Sweet words to a writer! I'm so glad you're on the blog tour ~ and that you and Morrow had a happier beginning than you and Lael;)(wink). See you soon!

  38. Maybe next time Laura, I've had Lady in the Mist on my wishlist for probably a month now. :-P Hehe I check almost everyday on Amazon and other sites for upcoming releases. Maybe you can surprise me with the date and official title for your next book!;-)

  39. Laurie Alice Eakes, author of The Lady in the Mist, asked me to add this comment as blogger is being very inhospitable. I'm so happy to hear from Laurie ~ she was so happy to read your cover comments!

"Thank you to Laura for the shout-out on Lady in the Mist. This is my 7th book, and 2 of my books are from Avalon, secular but sweet, mostly marketed to libraries, and 4 are from Heartsong, which mostly sells through book clubs. So this is my first mainstream book and first long one. It's the culmination of years of thinking about writing a midwife book after my study of midwives in graduate school for history.

And Revell did a stunning job on the cover. All I did was send them a picture of cloaks of teh time, which is 1809.

That all said, Tomorrow's Garden is a fabulous book. I get to read it ahead of time. Amanda is a talented author. I just discovered Laura's books so have added her to my TBR pile. If they're even half as great as she is, I know I'll love them."

  42. Doesn't Revell create beautiful covers? I've been absolutely thrilled with the three they've done for my Texas Dreams books, and I know that Ann Shorey feels the same way about hers.

For those of you who haven't read any of Laurie Alice's books, you're in for a treat. I just finished The Glassblower , and it was fabulous.

  43. Thanks so much, Amanda, for stopping by. Yes, we are truly blessed by Revell and their art team! They're inspired, to say the least. So nice to meet you! Looking forward to reading your books ~ and readers here are, too!
