pages and pages!

Whew! Can you believe we're into April already? The days are flying...the pages are flying! All 428 of them!
I've been busy reading through the typeset Love's Reckoning. At this stage, the pages are an author's last chance to prayerfully make a few changes (very few) to a manuscript before it goes to print. Thankfully, I've only found a few things to highlight in red. Pretty soon you'll hold the book in hand and I'm praying about that, too!
Over spring break, Randy and I drove down to Oregon and the beautiful Willamette Valley. The sun was shining and we enjoyed Mt. Hood and all the history in the region. Oregon is very different than Washington as there's no sales tax and you don't pump your own gas. Nice! We discovered Oregonians are very fond of their pets. They even have water fountains at ground level for dogs and such at the parks!

While there I was able to meet with one of the most delightful book clubs anywhere. They're a group of godly women with a heart for Christian fiction who get together regularly despite their busy schedules. We shared a wonderful luncheon and spent the afternoon talking books:) Heartfelt thanks to all the women for making me so welcome. Our hostess, Alissa (third from left) is a nurse with a heart for medical missions who hopes to go to India or the Philippines. Her mom, Elena, second from left, has the gift of hospitality and hosted this at her lovely home. Love these book clubs and the women who give them so much zest!!

Speaking of books, what page are you on? Any great reads to rave about?

  2. I wish I knew you were in Oregon! You were only about 6 hours from me. A nothing distance! ;-)

I'm hoping to start a book club here in my hometown, pray for me as I work on it, would you? :)

Seems like you've had a wonderful few days and excited to see that novel hit my mailbox!! :D

    1. LOL, Casey! Only 6 hours or so! I wouldn't dare ask you to do that! I think Amber is down here somewhere, too! I'll be back in the Portland area for a Lifeway signing in May but that's too far, too. Here's hoping we meet in Dallas:) You'd be THE BOMB for a book club! I promise to pray about that. It's such a great ministry and outreach, too, or can be. You'd be perfect. Can't wait till that novel hits your mailbox, too!

  3. Seeing those pages is so impressive and official looking! I can't wait to read your new book, Laura. And I can't imagine how it must feel to be multi-published. Do you have to pinch yourself every once in a while? . . . So glad you all had a great spring break. Blessings!

    1. Renee, You're right - those pages are quite official looking:) Crisp and clean and almost smelling like a real book. Quite a bit different than those manuscripts of mine in longhand! Yes, the pinch factor is still there, my friend. God is so good. I'm so thankful you're a faithful reader - that calls for another pinch!!

  4. How exciting that you received your galley and got it back to your publisher. I'm looking forward to reading the story.

What a blessing it must have been to meet with the book club. I'm glad you were able to do so. I'm sure they were thrilled to have you join them.

    1. Keli, This book club was so interesting - everything from teachers to Starbucks baristas to nurses to musicians and more:) It was truly a blessing as I can't do it very often in person which makes it all the more meaningful. I have a feeling you'll be seeing your galleys/pages soon as you're one step ahead of me with your book releasing this summer. JOY! I so look forward to spotlighting you here. I will try to make it as interesting as you do on your beautiful blog!!

  5. Your trip sounds so fun! I love getting together with other readers. And do I see you will be in Dallas in September? SO excited to meet you face-to-face! Of course your news of receiving your typeset pages has me a little freaked. I have to get this book turned in before those come in the mail or I'll pull my hair out! Yikes! :)

    1. Me, too, Anne - meeting readers in person is such a treat! And oh, yes, I'm dreaming of Dallas but am not sure I'll be there yet. Praying, praying!! I'd love to meet you in your neck of the woods. There's something about Texas, stetsons, cactus, Beth Moore, and you that's irrisistible;) Prayers with you as you finish that next book - no hair pulling please - lol!!

  6. Wow it looks like you had a great spring break! I have to say that I wish it was still winter. I know, I know, you're probably wondering what this warm weather loving girl is thinking but the last week of winter it was in the 70s and 80s here but now that it's spring it's only in the 50s. :-( *sigh* I hope you and your family had a Happy Easter! I'm really looking forward to getting Love's Reckoning for my "keeper shelf". :-D

    1. Renee, I really understand that weather thingy;) You all have had a winter heat wave till now! Believe it or not, it was snowing here the day we left for Oregon but was sunny down there. Of course I wanted to move in a heartbeat... We had a very good Easter and I hope you and yours did, too. And you said the magic words - *keeper shelf*! You know what makes my heart sing:) You're a keeper, too!!

  7. Those pages look good! And thanks for liking my state. Salem is about 4.5 hours from me. So close but still so far (especially as sick as I've been). The book club sounds like a fun thing, and it's great Randy could go with you. I'd probably want Brian to go with me too! Hoping you can settle in soon and give all (or at least most) of your attention to E and J. :)

    1. Lori, I kept thinking of you, Casey, and Amber the whole time I was down there. What a gorgeous state you have! But I knew you all were way too far away as Portland/Salem isn't very far down. Randy really enjoyed looking around and we discovered a wonderful antique mall while there. I brought home an 18th-century shoe paperweight:) It's sitting on top of all those pages now to keep them from flying away. No sign of E and J today. Sigh. Hopefully tomorrow. Praying you're feeling much better soon and getting some R&R, my friend.

Hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter - with sun and lots of Reese peanut butter eggs, to boot!

    1. Julia, LOVE your and Elizabeth's reading list. I hope she had the best birthday ever and got some good books:) You've named some of my favs, too. Would you believe, on my desk, I have some very old editions of Winnie the Pooh given to me when I was born? LOL - guess I'm dating myself! One book that's fairly modern that I love is called "Love You Forever." My mom read this at my brother's rehearsal dinner at their church and not a dry eye in the place. I still get choked up reading it. I sure miss those times spent reading when the boys were small. Such treasures to choose from!

  11. Yeah for "Love's Reckoning" getting closer to publication and for book clubs!! We used to live in a suburb of Salem, Oregon. Mt. Hood was the view out my kitchen window. Still miss beautiful, green Oregon. To help our budget I've been reading some classics between my fiction books. I'm sorry to report the ending of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter" has not changed. Always appreciate the protagonist's strength of character in Willa Cather's "O Pioneers". Read L.M. Montgomery's "The Blue Castle" on your recommendation, Laura. Great read. Recommending it to my book loving friends if they have not read it. Judy Robertson's non-fiction "Out of Mormonism" is super heavy, but informative. Also read Lisa Tawn Bergren's young adult fiction "Waterfall". I would recommend it to a pre-teen or teen girl. As the mother of three boys (grown) and three very young granddaughters, I could not really get in to this story. I would still read anything Lisa T Bergren writes! Loved "Highland Sanctuary" by Jennifer Hudson Taylor. "Paper Roses" by Amanda Cabot and "The Fence My Father Built" by Linda S. Clare, not so much my style. Currently reading "The Rose of Winslow Street" by Elizabeth Camden. The plot and character development didn't "grab" me as fast as "The Lady of Bolton Hill", but I'm still enjoying this read. What I am searching for are books for my 9 year old grandson. I know nothing of the current market and would love some recommendations. I gave him "Orphaned on the Oregon Trail" for Easter. I'm anxious to know how he likes it. He loves biographies. We give books for ALL occasions in our family. I also put book lights in the Easter baskets of the grandbabies 6+ years. Laura, thanks so much for this great book sharing time on your blog. I love learning about new books.

    1. Mary, Oh, you are the best kind of grandma:) I love giving books, too, and book lights in Easter baskets is a very fine thing! I love this book talk, too, as I get great ideas of books I might pass over. Your list and commentary are great!! Thanks for such great detail. I have "Highland Sanctuary" and "The Rose of WS" on my Kindle. "The Lady of Bolton Hill" is in my stack right here and so you've reminded me to get to it.

And I had to chuckle at your comment on TSL. Oh, those classics cared nothing for happy endings! Maybe that's why I loved "Jane Eyre" so very much as it was so unclassically happy after all that angst!

My Paul has just finished reading "The Hunger Games." He loved it but I'm not sure I'll read. Am wondering if you've read "The Help"? I have not. Most of my reading now is done for endorsements which are future books yet to release. So I sometimes feel unsavvy about current books, too.

"Orphaned on the Oregon Trail" sounds like my kind of book! I kept thinking of that history while in Oregon. We spent one night in Salem so it's very interesting that you once lived there! Beautiful place! SO, SO happy you enjoyed The Blue Castle. That's one of my all time favorites and I hope your friends enjoy it as much as we did.

As for non-fic, I'm loving my copy of "The Many Faces of George Washington." And I'm currently doing lots of research on the violin and collecting Guarneris and Strads for this next book.

My regret is that there are so many books and so little time - I have a feeling you can relate!

  12. The picture of Mt. Hood makes me want to visit your stunning side of The States for sure!! I just finished the Catching Fire the 2nd book of the Hunger Games. I am waiting until my friend gets back from her vacation to loan me the 3rd in the series from her i-Pad. (In the meantime, I am reading Catching the Sun by Traci Peterson.) That is one thing I love about the Kindle. It is great to be able to loan books back and forth among friends. I am going to loan her one by a certain author know ;). I have this author's first book on my Kindle!

I can picture your book all finished and bound with your beautiful cover! Thanks for sharing what the typeset looks like!

Yes, the next step is a printed book with cover and such! Revell attached a surprise after THE END for you readers so I hope you enjoy that, too! Am dying to tell you about it but no spoilers here. And you would have to mention the "B" word! I'm avoiding it all costs and think I'll begin counting backwards. I was never good at math anyway;) We April babies have to stick together, huh?!

  15. Oh Laura, that's so exciting! Both your book being so close to 'done' and you visiting a book club. How awesome is that? And it looks like a very scenic drive. I'm totally converted ot Oregon now that I know how dog friendly they are. Simba and I are ready to roll! LOL.

I'd love to start a Christian book club as well. I tried doing it at my church but it just didn't work out. I think I need a larger group to draw from. I never thought of a multi-denominational one before but maybe that's the way to go. I'll have to think on that.

Can't wait to read Love's Reckoning!!!!!!

    1. Oh Kav, YOU are the quintessential one to start a book club! Only I would want to join it and how would that work? SKYPE!?! Our church tried one as well and it quickly folded. Am not sure what happened there except our congregation is very small and there were some strong personalities and very divergent tastes. The book club I met with in Oregon is made up of ladies from different churches. Some of them only came together through their work. So you can draw from different places, etc.

SIMBA would LOVE Oregon:) I was oh so delighted when I saw that big dog drinking out of the small doggie water fountain in the riverfront park! That's a first for me! The dog looked quite happy and refreshed;)

Hope LR goes on your keeper shelf, my friend. Always love hearing from you.

  16. Oh, Laura, what a tease seeing all those wonderful pages of Love's Reckoning just sitting there waiting to be devoured! It's a good thing I don't live nearby, or I might be tempted to sneak in and "borrow" them... :) Can't wait till I can hold a copy in my hands!

The picture you posted that was taken while you were in Oregon is exquisite. What a beautiful, scenic, weekend you must have had. (Although, you're already surrounded by quite a bit of amazing nature where you live.) :)

So fun you were able to meet with a book club! Which book did you discuss? Thanks for sharing these lovely photos and the highlights of your weekend. Hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter!

    1. Christina, Love the "devour" word;) That's wonderful to hear! If you lived closer I might well slip you the pages! Strange that no one sees them but me and my editors and they just sit there waiting to be read...

You're right - we're surrounded by so much that is so similar to Oregon. We did have a great time and I'm so thankful. When we were first married - well, about 10 years in fact - we never took a true trip or vacation. So everytime we get out even on an overnighter it's a real treat! And now that the boys are big enough to leave home it's even more relaxing. They usually don't want to go with us old folks, anyway!

Love your book club questions. Believe it or not, they've just read Courting Morrow Little and The Colonel's Lady and also The Hunger Games. I felt in pretty good company! I'm not sure what's on tap for them next and wish I'd asked. They asked me for favorite authors of mine and that was fun to share.

I hope you and your loved ones had a wonderful Easter, too. I can just imagine the JOY of having your little one hunting for eggs or getting a taste of all that Easter is. I bet you took some great pics!!

  17. Praying for you as you consider minor changes to LR, and I'm so glad you had a wonderful book club experience in Oregon! I've never been to Oregon or Washington, but I've heard its beautiful country. :-)

I've just finished "Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers, and I loved it! What a powerful story! I decided that I couldn't keep it to myself, and so I'm hosting my very first book giveaway as I post my review.

I'm a quarter through TFD, and I am enjoying it! Last scene I read, she was surrounded by Indians and came face-to-face with Captain Jack. I don't think Captain Jack will make her stay with him because of her father's influence, but that's just a guess. I'm wondering if he's Ian. (Don't tell me though. ;-)

    1. Gwen, Oh yes, Redeeming Love is a must read!! I'm so glad you think so, too:) Though poor Lael has a hard act to follow! Bless you for taking time for her story. Love your thoughts about CJ and Ian. And no, I wouldn't dare tell you;)

I'll have to come by your blog and thumbs up that giveaway. I'm sure you'll have a few wanting to read. It's such a powerful story in light of it being Francine's testimony and making a break from writing for the secular market. No wonder it continues to grace bestseller lists for years and years. She's a wonderful writer.

Thanks so much for your prayers as this book goes to print. One of my endorsers called me yesterday to tell me she'd finished reading and to talk about the book. I hope readers enjoy it as much as she did. I miss those characters and wish I could return to that world. Sigh.

Bless you as you write and read and mother and do all else, dear Gwen!

  18. Laura, as I said on FB seeing those pages has literally made my day. :) I can't wait to read LR.

I finished "Promise Me This" by Cathy Gohlke over the weekend. It was wonderful! I high recommend it. I also recently finished "The Maid of Fairbourne Hall" by Julie Klassen, which was great as well. I have no idea what I'm going to end up reading next, but I'm sure I'll figure it out soon.

Since you mentioned Panera, in one of the replies above, I have to share this with you. I introduced one of my co-workers to Panera about a month or so ago. She's gone multiple times a week since then, lol. Will think about you tomorrow, when I go to Panera before my Bible study.

    1. Michelle, I'm thrilled you're ready to read LR! Hope it's a keeper book for you. I really am attached to this story in so many ways and pray it's a blessing. Not too much longer:)

OH YES! Cathy's new book sounds great and I've been hearing a lot of buzz about it. I'm so glad you mentioned it so Mary and others might take a look, too. I downloaded the first few pages on my Kindle and really want to order after reading them. Now for the time to do it! I think the both of us are so interested in that Titanic history/anniversary. I've not read Julie's latest but love the cover. Would love to know what you're reading next!!

Oh, am chuckling about your Panera sharing - lol;) If you could have seen me scouting for one on the way to Oregon and back! And then we flew by one at a mall and couldn't find an exit so am afraid it was Arby's and Olive Garden for us. Not a bad exchange, however! Eat some Panera's quiche and have some coffee for me. I'd love to meet up with you and your friend there - or join you before Bible study! Heavenly!!

  19. Laura, I can't decide what makes me smile more, reading your posts or reading your comments! You have an amazing group of blog followers. :) The book club looks like so much fun! I have a small group in comparison (there are just four of us) and we read sporadically around having children (each of us has four children under the age of 7!) - but you would be at the top of my list for visiting authors. I wish Washington and Minnesota were closer...

I just finished Julie Klassen's "The Maid of Fairbourne Hall" and loved it. It wasn't my favorite of Julie's, but the last third of it I couldn't put down and finished it in a rare afternoon when the girls were at school and the boys were napping. It's the first book I've read since picking up my manuscript again in January and I realized I need to be reading more (I used to read a couple books a month!) - there is just so little time in the day to accomplish writing, blogging, reading and the rest of my life!

My sister called to tell me she just picked up "Courting Morrow Little" and asked me if I liked it better than "The Colonel's Lady" and I had to tell her that there is no comparison. Although, I love how emotionally entrenched I get with your characters and, for some reason, I felt more connected with Morrow. I can't wait until she finishes it so her and I can chat about it - talking books is so much fun.

    1. Gabrielle, Oh, so, so glad you're a book clubber!! I think small groups are great and I imagine how much fun and how encouraging it is to meet with young moms like yourself. I so wish I could come to Minnesota and talk books with you all:) If I ever get to travel more, I'd love to do that. You have such a beautiful state. My first serious crush/boyfriend went to Bemidji U. (am I spelling that right?) and was from there. But that's ancient hx, I guess. Strangely enough, he moved to Washington State and I ran into him not long ago!

I really understand how hard it is to read (or write or do anything consistently) when your kids are young. I managed to read a lot while nursing my boys but when they got legs I spent all my time running after them. And you have twins!! I chuckled at your descip. of them on your blog(s). They're so precious. And so very different! Thank heavens for naps, huh?

Love your thoughts on Morrow. I've come across so many who like that story best. And I'm honored by that as it was a real labor of love to write and had a part of my heart in it that no other story has. Hard to explain. Hope your sis loves it as much as you!! And hope that new nephew of yours is doing well - babies beat books by a mile, I always say:)

So glad you had a nice trip, my friend! Must be fun to be a part of a book club, especially when a favorite authors pays a visit!! :)

And, thank you for today's "Promises" post. I needed that right now. The promises of our Lord truly are our "everyday sources of comfort." A promise I've been clinging to lately is Psalm 34:19 "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all." Amen. Jesus keeps His promises and He has never failed us before. Good and faithful is our God!

SO thrilled you are ready to fall in love with another hero:) I hope he's worthy! He's certainly won my heart in fresh ways. I even love his Biblical name. Not too much longer now and the teasing will be over!

Praying for you and your family, dear friend. I think of you so often and hope you're being blessed way over there on your side of the country. If I could I'd look you up and take you to lunch. You could show me some of your fav historic sites. JOY!!

  25. Hey Laura. I was just at the library buying books and came across a historical book of letters written through a war and thought of you. I checked recently to see when Love's Reckoning would be released... and it has a while, but I am so looking forward to it. I rarely read fiction novels any longer so yours will be a definite treat. Hope all is well!

    1. Adrienne, Oh, bless you soooo much for thinking of my and wanting to read LR:) That means so much. I've been thinking of you, too, and am glad you're doing well and enjoying that history. Historical love letters sound like my cup of tea and maybe yours, too!! It's wonderful to hear from you anytime. I hope you're having a blessed spring. Till we meet again:) Prayers with you!

  26. Laura,

Blessed by the devotion once again, thanks :)

Tickets, room confirmation...Dallas is beginning to feel like Christmas :)

At least when I'm not getting a wee bit shaky thinking of it all :)

Good choice. I still can't read Love You Forever or any of Max Lucado's kids books (have you read the Wemmicks books) without choking up.

    1. I loved this prayer/devotional, too, Julia:) I wish I had a more praise-tuned heart. Oh melancholy me! Love that Dallas feels like Christmas!! I'm so ready to go myself and am hoping it comes about. I'd love to meet you there!! Chris is just a gem:) You'll love every minute and learn so much. It's always so for me and I've been 3x - every one is different and each city unique, though I think Dallas can't be beat!!

Haven't read the Wemmicks books! But now I want to! Bless u bunches:)

    2. Oh, I'm so glad you love Dallas. I have a feeling we have quite similiar travel tastes with historical sites. I'm very blessed :)

I won't be one of the squealers, but it would be so neat to see you. You and the Alley gals are some of the people I would be most excited to meet.

  27. LOL, I'm not a squealer either;) That's 150% of the fun of being there - seeing people in person you've only met online or on paper!! LOVE. THAT.!
